The Society for Environmental Education in Taiwan (SEET) was founded in 1992 by a group of educators working in universities and in the government. With about 400 members from the academia, government, and non-governmental organizations, as well as primary and secondary school teachers, and graduate students, the SEET aims to balance research and practice in the field of environmental education. The objectives of the society are to pool together resources from various sectors, to conduct research and outreach programs, and to establish cooperation and partnerships with domestic and international environmental groups in order to facilitate the flow of information and the exchange of experience. Each year the SEET publishes an academic journal and a general magazine; together with various environmental education institutes, the society holds an annual conference on both research and practice – a perfect forum for environmental educators from diverse backgrounds.
In addition to its function as a think tank, the SEET also engages directly in the field of environmental education. Many of its members are involved in the planning and execution of environmental education policies and related activities through their participation in government projects. The SEET was instrumental in advocating for the Environmental Education Law, which was passed by the Legislative Yuan in May 2010. Since then the SEET has been actively involved in shaping the future implementation of the law. Lately the society has also expanded its operation. Working with corporations and other NGOs, the SEET hosts workshops and educational programs, and consults with nature centers on their operation. By bringing environmental education to the general public and providing professional training to practitioner in this field, the SEET helps raise the quality of environmental education in Taiwan.
